A service pistol at scale

The M1911A1 was an evolution of the earlier M1911 and became a major U.S. military sidearm during the Second World War. Its wartime production illustrates the enormous scale of American industrial mobilization.

Manufacturing realities

Multiple contractors and changing production conditions meant that wartime examples can display differences in finish, markings and small components. Those differences are part of the production history, not automatically evidence of a problem.

Researching an example

Collectors should document the pistol as it exists today and then compare that configuration with reliable period references. A careful record can help identify replaced parts and preserve the historical story of the object.

Beyond the model name

The M1911A1 is often discussed as a model designation, but each surviving example is also an individual historical object with its own production and ownership story.
